Let some arrows be picked up after the fight, but not the lost ones
Ammunition makes hunting tense, and collecting spent arrows is a nice reward. The trouble is deciding which ones survive, so that results repeat on reload and the quiver never overflows. This entry covers the count, the ground and the limit.
Why this works
Scarce ammunition makes every shot a choice, and a chance to get some back softens the loss without removing it. Deciding once, when the fight ends, from a fixed list of dice results, keeps the outcome the same however often the player reloads.
When not to use it
Skip it when ammunition is meant to be unlimited or very cheap, or in a fast fight where nobody stops to search the ground. Then give a plain refill at the next camp, so nobody collects arrows for tedious minutes.
