Characters on a moving boat or lift do a walking dance or walk on the spot wrongly

On a moving ship the whole crew is travelling, yet most should be standing still, and the one who walks should step at the right pace. If the walk animation looks at the speed over the sea floor, everybody on deck is running. And a spinning platform is trickier still.

Why this works

Feet care about the surface they stand on, not the world. Subtracting the surface's own motion from the player's gives the speed the legs must match, and a turning platform moves faster the farther you stand from its centre, so the position matters too.

When not to use it

Wrong when the platform does not carry the player, such as ice that slides under them or a conveyor that drags only partly. Use the speed over ground there. It is also pointless on a platform too slow to notice.
