Is the countdown on my story choices too short? Timeouts that bias the data

When a choice has a timer, the people who ran out of time are exactly the ones your numbers do not show. Measuring how fast players answer then points you the wrong way. This entry explains what to look at first and how to find a better length for the timer.

Why this works

A timer cuts off the slow, so the answers you do see are the fast ones and look healthy. Only when few players run out of time does the spread of answer times say anything about fit; many timeouts already mean the timer is too short.

When not to use it

Wrong where the pressure is the point, such as a panic choice meant to be missed sometimes, and with little data. Offer a setting to switch the timer off or stretch it, so players who need more time can have it.
