Keep the number of choice combinations small enough to check

Every yes or no the player answers doubles the number of situations your story can be in, and soon nobody, not even your AI, can test them all. Here is how to count the combinations that really matter and drop the ones that cannot change anything later.

Why this works

What a story remembers only matters while something later still looks at it. Two playthroughs that differ only in facts nobody will read again are the same situation, so counting only the facts still to be used keeps the checking small.

When not to use it

Wrong for a short story with only a handful of flags, where checking everything is already quick. Then just test every path in full and shrink the count only once it gets slow.

In the full entry

  • What to build, step by step
  • Starting values and the reason for each
  • 3 common mistakes and the fix
  • A diagram of every state
  • 44 lines of example code with 4 checks that pass
  • How your AI shows you that it works

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "Keep the number of choice combinations small enough to check" (read_entry too-many-flag-combinations-in-choices) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.

Or skip this and connect the MCP: your AI then finds all of this by itself.Connect the MCP
