Switch to crafted fire rounds mid-magazine without destroying the old bullets
The player crafts special rounds and switches to them with seven normal bullets still loaded. Where do the seven go? If they vanish, players learn never to swap; if the new magazine overfills, they get free bullets. This entry moves the rounds back and forth correctly.
Why this works
Players only experiment with options that cost nothing. If switching destroys what was loaded, they stop switching. Treating the magazine as a loan from the reserve means the total never changes in a swap, so trying a new type is free and only shooting or crafting changes the count.
When not to use it
Do not make swaps free in games where reloading is the tension, such as a slow survival shooter. There, let the swap take real time or lose the partly used magazine, so the choice of ammo is made before the fight.
