When does a growing city stop growing, and for how long?
Players enjoy watching their numbers climb. A long stretch where nothing moves is where they lose interest, but a collapse is something else and should not be mixed in. This entry shows how to find the longest flat stretch in a growth curve.
Why this works
Players feel growth in proportion to what they already have. Adding ten to fifty is a leap, ten to five thousand is nothing. Judging change as a share, and letting any big move break the run, finds stretches that feel stuck at any size.
When not to use it
Don't treat a flat stretch as a flaw when it is a planned breather, or in games where the number is not what the player cares about. Check what they do during it: if they are busy, the stretch is fine.
