Spielerando

Which resource do players run out of first, and is it the one you planned?

The first thing that runs out shapes the early story of a base builder, because it decides what the player learns next. This entry shows how to find that first shortage per player, including the awkward case where two run out in the same moment.

Why this works

The first thing to run out is what the player feels as the bottleneck, and it shapes every choice after. Later shortages follow from it. Splitting ties fairly and noting who never ran short tells you which resource steers the game, and whether anything does.

When not to use it

Don't read a pattern as a problem where scarcity is meant to bite, or where the first shortage differs by plan, like rushing one strategy. Then it describes styles rather than flaws. Compare styles separately.
