Other players' characters stutter because updates come in a few times a second

In an online game your friend's character jumps from place to place instead of gliding. Drawing the newest known spot is exactly what causes it. Here is the trick that makes remote bodies smooth, what to do when an update is late, and what it costs you.

Why this works

News about other players arrives in bursts, so the newest known spot is always a single point with nothing around it. Drawing a little in the past means there are always two known spots to glide between, and you show what truly happened instead of a guess.

When not to use it

Wrong when other players must be seen at once, such as aiming at a fast target or a duel where a few tenths of a second decide who wins. Then accept some guessing, or let the server check hits against what the shooter saw.
