Move a creature's legs by stepping when a foot gets too far, never lifting both

A spider, robot or animal walking over uneven ground cannot use a fixed walking loop, since the speed and the ground change all the time. Here is a rule where each foot stays put until it is too far from where it should be, then steps, and the others wait their turn so the body never loses support.

Why this works

A foot that stays planted until it is too far from home never slides, and allowing only one foot in the air at a time guarantees the body is always held up. The rule needs no fixed loop, so it copes with any speed or terrain.

When not to use it

Wrong for a creature that must run or jump, where all feet leave the ground, and for fast hand-timed gaits like a galloping horse. Use a looped clip tied to speed there. Lifting one foot at a time is also too slow for a heavy, fast body.
