Spielerando

A town keeps switching between village and city as people come and go

Population wobbles a little every day, so a town sitting right at a limit gets promoted, demoted and promoted again, and every change pops up a message and rebuilds the screen. This entry explains why a single limit is the wrong tool and gives a rule that makes promotion easy and demotion deliberate.

Why this works

A line that is crossed in both directions at the same place will be crossed again and again by small shifts. Making it easier to stay than to arrive puts a buffer around each limit, so only a real change, not everyday noise, moves a town.

When not to use it

Skip it when the number changes slowly and smoothly, or when the player should feel every loss at once, as in a fast survival game. Then a sharp line is clearer, and a buffer only hides that the town is already in trouble.
