Make sure the rival has a line for every mix of earlier fight outcomes
The rival remembers whether you won the duel and whether you spared them. With a few outcomes each, some mixes get no line at all and others match two lines that disagree. Here is how your AI lists every mix, names the empty ones and the doubled ones, and says which line wins.
Why this works
A rival who remembers is a table of every mix of earlier results, and a hole in the table is a silent rival. Listing all mixes, not only those that seem possible, finds gaps and clashes before the player does, since later edits make unlikely mixes real.
When not to use it
Skip it when the outcomes are so many that the table explodes; then group them into a few moods the rival reacts to. And where only the last choice matters, a short list read from the top is simpler than a full table.
