Speed-up tokens get wasted when a big one is used on a few seconds left

Players own a pile of small and large time-savers and a timer with a bit left. Picking the biggest first throws value away. Here is how to choose the combination that finishes the timer with the least waste and the fewest tokens.

Why this works

Waste is the gap between what is paid and what is needed, so the right choice is whichever combination leaves the smallest gap. A quick search over the few real options beats a simple rule like largest first, which fails on awkward amounts.

When not to use it

Skip it when players should decide how to spend their own items, or when there is only one kind of token. A suggested combination then takes the choice away; show the remaining time and let them tap the tokens they want.
