Give a stuck player a hint that names the next thing to make, not the whole answer

A crafting puzzle has a goal item behind several steps, and the player is stuck. A hint that spells out everything spoils the puzzle, a hint that only says "gather more" is no help, and one that suggests making a part twice wastes material. This entry names the one next step and what is still missing.

Why this works

A stuck player usually needs one push, not the full answer. Working out the whole plan privately and then revealing it a little at a time keeps the puzzle theirs. Planning against a copy of the stock stops the same material being promised to two different parts.

When not to use it

Do not rely on it for puzzles that have no fixed recipe tree, such as open-ended experiments or riddles solved by insight. There a hint must come from the author's own words, written by hand for each stuck point.

In the full entry

  • What to build, step by step
  • Starting values and the reason for each
  • 3 common mistakes and the fix
  • 54 lines of example code with 5 checks that pass
  • How your AI shows you that it works
