Merge a whole pile of tiered items at once and let the leftovers climb the ladder
A "merge all" button turns a stack of small gems into bigger ones. Done in the wrong order, the button leaves a pile of items that could still be merged, so the player has to press it again and again. This entry works through all the levels in one press and says exactly what is left.
Why this works
Each level can only be settled once the level below has finished handing things up to it. Working from the bottom, every level already holds everything it will ever receive when you reach it. One pass therefore finishes the job, and nothing is left for a second press.
When not to use it
Do not offer it where the player is meant to decide what to keep, for example rare pieces they are saving for a quest. A single button that eats everything punishes them. Merge one level at a time there, or ask first.
