Spielerando

Spot the puzzle level where people stare before they touch anything

When the first touch takes unusually long, the goal is probably unclear rather than the puzzle hard. This entry shows how to pick out such levels from a list of waiting times without one odd level distorting the yardstick.

Why this works

Staring before the first touch means the player does not yet know what to do, while a hard puzzle shows up as slow moves later. And a yardstick built from the middle of the group cannot be bent by the one odd level it is meant to catch.

When not to use it

Skip it when you have only a handful of levels or when levels differ in kind, since long thinking may be intended, as with a reading-heavy riddle. Then compare each level with its own earlier versions, or watch new players open it.
