Pace a long chain reaction so it speeds up but never becomes unreadable
A chain of eight clears at the pace of the first one drags on for ages, while squeezing each step by a fixed amount turns the end into a blur and a machine-gun of sounds. Here is a pacing rule that builds excitement, keeps a floor, and still respects a total time limit.
Why this works
A long chain is exciting at first and tiring at the end. Letting each step come quicker than the last builds energy, while a floor keeps every step readable and a total limit stops the show from outstaying its welcome.
When not to use it
Skip it when each step is a decision the player must follow, such as a puzzle that asks you to predict the outcome. Keep an even, slow pace there, or let the player press a button to advance.
