Back from the settings screen lands in the wrong place

Menus that open other menus, from the game, from combat, from a shop, tend to send the player back to a fixed screen or let one menu open twice on top of itself. This entry gives a simple way to always return to exactly where they came from.

Why this works

Screens opened on top of each other behave like a pile of papers: you can only take the top one off. Letting the pile remember the order, instead of each screen knowing where to go back to, is what returns the player to exactly where they were.

When not to use it

Skip it for a game with one simple pause screen and nothing inside it, or for menus that must always lead to a fixed place, such as a title screen after a game over. A single fixed screen is easier there.

In the full entry

  • What to build, step by step
  • Starting values and the reason for each
  • 3 common mistakes and the fix
  • A diagram of every state
  • 23 lines of example code with 4 checks that pass
  • How your AI shows you that it works

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "Back from the settings screen lands in the wrong place" (read_entry pause-menu-stack-returns-to-previous) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.

Or skip this and connect the MCP: your AI then finds all of this by itself.Connect the MCP
