Tell two knights in the party apart when an NPC talks about them
When two players pick the same kind of hero, a line like "the knight is hurt" points at nobody. Here is how a narrator picks the shortest description that still names exactly one of them, and what to say when the two look identical.
Why this works
People in a world point at each other by what they can see, not by hidden labels. Adding only as much detail as is needed to tell one from another sounds natural, and trying the details in a fixed order keeps the same person from getting two different descriptions.
When not to use it
Skip it when characters have strong, memorable looks of their own, or when the plot is better served by the player name, as when a character knows them personally. Then simply use the name they would use.
