Catch up a player who joins mid-story without retelling everything

A friend joins at chapter four and either gets a wall of summary or none at all and cannot follow the next scene. Here is how to work out the few earlier events that this particular person still needs, and where the search should stop.

Why this works

A scene only confuses someone who lacks the events it quietly leans on. Following those links backwards finds exactly the missing ground, and stopping at anything the person already saw avoids repeating what they know, because that event carried its own background.

When not to use it

Skip it when the story is a loose string of episodes that stand alone, or when the newcomer wants to be surprised and would rather piece it together. There a single sentence of mood does more than a list of facts.
