Let a title held by one player pass on when two challenge it at once
Only one player at a time can be the warden of the pass, and two reach for it in the same second. Here is the rule that gives it to exactly one, how much better a challenger has to be, and what happens when the holder is gone for weeks.
Why this works
When two people reach for one thing, the fair answer cannot depend on whose message was quicker. Checking that the claimant saw the current holder settles the race by the facts, and a margin stops a title from swapping back and forth on small differences.
When not to use it
Skip it when many people may share the honour, such as a top-ten list, or when the title is awarded by a vote or by the story rather than by a contest. Then there is nothing to win from each other.
