Players use up a key too early and can no longer finish the game
In a haunted house with one key and two locked doors, the order matters, and a player who picks the wrong door is stuck without knowing it. Here is a search that tries every order, tells you whether the game can be won and counts the situations from which it cannot.
Why this works
A game is only fair if every situation a player can reach still leads to the end. Checking what you own at the end misses the order of choices. Trying every order shows the dead ends before a player finds them.
When not to use it
It does not scale to a huge open world with hundreds of items and freely moving characters, since the number of situations explodes. There, check small parts one at a time, or design so the key items cannot be lost.
