Fix huge numbers in an idle game that show as 1e+21, NaN or 1000K

Once the counter grows big, the screen fills with ugly scientific notation, a word that is not a number, or a number that is rounded one step too high. This entry shows how to make the AI write a short display helper that stays readable and never lies at the edge.

Why this works

A big number on screen is only a message to a human, and it has to be short and true at the same time. The danger sits at the seams, where one unit of size turns into the next. Rounding first and then choosing the unit keeps the text honest.

When not to use it

Short text is wrong when the player needs the exact amount, such as paying a price or comparing two nearly equal offers. Show the full number there, with separators between the digit groups, and shorten only the headline counter.

In the full entry

  • What to build, step by step
  • Starting values and the reason for each
  • 4 common mistakes and the fix
  • A diagram of every state
  • 27 lines of example code with 4 checks that pass
  • How your AI shows you that it works

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "Fix huge numbers in an idle game that show as 1e+21, NaN or 1000K" (read_entry idle-game-huge-numbers-show-wrong) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.
