The loading bar sticks near the end or says done before the game is ready

One picture that never arrives can keep the game on the loading screen forever, and a bar that counts files instead of size jumps to the end while the heavy files are still coming. Here is how to measure progress honestly and decide when to go on without a file.

Why this works

A loading bar answers one question: how much waiting is left. Counting files misleads because files differ in weight. And a game that waits for a file that will never arrive is stuck. So set limits on waiting, and decide in advance what can be missed.

When not to use it

Do not preload everything for a large game with many areas. Players wait too long up front. Load the first area, show the bar for that, and fetch the rest quietly in the background while they play.
