Let fear run through a herd, nearer animals first, and calm down again

When one animal bolts, the others should follow, and the farther away they stand the later and the weaker. Spreading it in a single pass makes the whole herd run at once; never fading makes it run forever. This entry gives a turn-by-turn rule for both.

Why this works

Fear travels through a herd the way a rumour does: stronger up close, weaker far away, and it fades without a fresh cause. Working out the next moment only from the last one keeps it from jumping across everyone at once.

When not to use it

Skip it for animals that act alone, or when the herd should obey one leader and run together at a set signal. Then give the leader the decision and let the others copy it, which is easier to read.
