Record a ghost run and replay it at the right speed on any computer

A ghost of your best run is a fine rival, until it runs too fast on a quicker screen, creeps on a slower one, or takes a huge file because it saved every frame. Here is a way to record on a fixed beat and replay by the clock, so the ghost always arrives when you did.

Why this works

A recording is only useful if it means the same thing on every machine. Noting where the player was at even moments in seconds, not at each picture drawn, makes the file independent of how fast the computer was, and playback can fill the gaps.

When not to use it

Do not use it when you need every single action exactly, such as a full replay of a fight where each button press matters. Save the inputs and the random seed, and let the game replay them.

Use the Spielerando entry "Record a ghost run and replay it at the right speed on any computer" (read_entry ghost-replay-recorded-on-a-fixed-beat) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.
