Merge looted food into a stack without refreshing the old portions
Bread found today and bread found last week look the same in the bag, and merging them is natural. Done the simple way, the old loaves turn fresh, or the new ones spoil with the old. This entry keeps each portion's age through merges, eating and rot.
Why this works
Age belongs to the thing, not to the pile. Keeping each batch's own time, and eating the oldest first, means merging for tidiness never changes what is true about the food, so no loaf turns fresh or spoils before its day.
When not to use it
Don't track age for each portion when food is only a quick heal and nobody will ever notice, or when spoiling is not part of the game. One simple count is lighter on the player and on your save file.
