Spielerando

Let players search a room for hidden loot without searching the same spot forever

If every search is a fresh roll, players press the key until the secret door opens, and finding things stops meaning anything. If it is one roll only, bad luck hides it for good. This entry gives a second chance only when the player has become better, and lets sharp eyes see the obvious at once.

Why this works

A repeat should be earned. Allowing a new try only when the character has grown stops endless pressing of the same key, while letting obvious things be seen at once means skill, not patience, decides what a person finds.

When not to use it

Don't gate searches this way in a gentle exploration game where hidden things are small treats, or where a missed key item would stall the story. Make the vital find certain, and keep the chance only for bonuses.
