Decide what happens to gear when a strength potion wears off
A heavy hammer needs more strength than the hero has, so the hero drinks a potion, equips it, and the potion wears off. Some games throw the hammer into a full bag, some keep it giving full power, and some let two rings hold each other up. This entry picks one answer that cannot be abused.
Why this works
What an item gives should follow what the hero is right now. Building up from nothing and asking each piece what it needs means help that wears off is withdrawn as it should be, and pieces cannot prop each other up out of thin air.
When not to use it
Don't tie gear to temporary boosts in a game with simple, readable rules for new players, where an item suddenly turning grey is confusing. Use a plain level requirement checked once when you equip, and say so clearly.
