Spielerando

Show whether new gear is better when it replaces two items at once

The little green arrow beside a new weapon is only right if it compares the whole outfit before and after. A big two-handed weapon looks like a gain until you notice it throws away the shield. This entry works out the real change for every stat.

Why this works

A fair comparison looks at the player before and after, not at two items side by side. Building the whole outfit that would result shows what is gained and what is given up, so a strong weapon cannot hide the shield it costs.

When not to use it

Don't show a net comparison when gear changes the style of play more than the numbers, such as a wand that swaps the whole set of attacks. There, a column of plus and minus hides the point. Describe what the item does instead.
