Make food spoil by age and use the oldest first
If all the grain in the barn is one pile, either it all rots on the same day or none ever does. Real stores hold batches of different age. This entry keeps the age of each delivery, lets old batches go bad, and feeds the town from the oldest ones first so less is wasted.
Why this works
Food in the real world comes in deliveries, each with its own age. Keeping them apart lets old goods go bad while new ones stay fresh, and eating the oldest first is the choice any sensible household makes, so the player wastes as little as possible.
When not to use it
Skip it when food is a simple counter and spoiling would only add chores, as in a relaxed town builder. Also skip it when the player cannot choose what to eat; a plain total is clearer there.
