Build an upgrade ladder where late levels are risky but luck cannot run out
Upgrading a sword from plus zero to plus ten should be exciting at the top and boring at the bottom. Fixed odds lead to players burning through hundreds of stones, or to levels that fall back and feel unfair. This entry sets odds, a fall rule and a guaranteed success.
Why this works
Players accept steep odds when they can see an end to bad luck. A ladder that is easy at first, harsh at the top and backed by a guaranteed success lets tension build without letting anyone fall into endless spending.
When not to use it
Do not use risky upgrades when the items carry a story or have been won with great effort, or when the stones cost real money. Losing a level there stings in the wrong way. Make upgrades safe and pay with time.
