Spending energy restarts the refill clock, so players lose minutes for nothing

Games with a slowly refilling energy bar often calculate the refill wrongly: they reset the countdown on every spend, or keep counting while the bar is full and give a free flood later. Here is the bookkeeping that is fair and needs no running timer.

Why this works

Time passing is a fact you can look up later, so nothing needs to run while the game is closed. Keeping the moment a point was last earned, and moving it only by whole intervals, means no waiting is ever lost, however often or rarely the player looks.

When not to use it

Skip it when energy must be shared between devices or protected against a changed clock. Then the time has to come from a server, which keeps the count and tells every device the same answer.
