Magic power refills while the player is still casting, so spells never run out

Energy that regenerates instantly makes resource management disappear: just keep casting. A short pause before the refill starts brings back the choice of when to act. The delicate part is a pause that ends in the middle of a frame.

Why this works

A pause before refilling asks for a rhythm of burst, then rest. Counting only the time after the pause, and splitting a frame that crosses its end, keeps the pause the same length for everyone, whatever the speed of the device.

When not to use it

Skip the delay in games built around constant casting with small costs, or for a very weak refill. There the pause only frustrates; use a steady slow trickle, or tie refills to pickups and kills instead.
