Decide what the next character knows after the last one died
In a game where dying means starting over as someone new, the world remembers some things and the person does not. Get the split wrong and the new character knows secrets they never learned, or the world forgets a door that was opened.
Why this works
Not everything dies with a person. What happened to the world stays, what only they knew goes with them, and a deed becomes a rumour for the next one. Sorting facts this way keeps the story going without cheating the loss.
When not to use it
Skip it in a game where death ends everything, or where the heir is the same person waking up again. Then no sorting is needed, and the cost to the story comes from elsewhere, such as lost time or a lost place.
