At dusk the whole wildlife list changes in one second, so fade it instead

Switching to the night list at a set hour makes creatures pop in as if a switch was thrown, and blending two lists the obvious way lets the bigger list swallow the smaller one. This shows how to move between lists smoothly so every creature keeps the share you meant.

Why this works

A list of weights only says who is more likely than whom, not how big each share is. Mixing two lists therefore has to start from shares, so each creature keeps the part of the crowd you meant, and a smooth change over the hour avoids a sudden switch.

When not to use it

Skip it when the change of scene is meant to be dramatic, like a night that begins with an alarm, or when day and night creatures must never be seen together. Then use a hard switch at a clear moment.
