Spielerando

Poison does a random bit of harm each turn: how late can the cure come?

With random damage each turn, the average says the player dies on a certain turn, yet some die earlier and some much later, and a warning timer built on the average is wrong both ways. This shows the real chance of dying by each turn and how to set an honest deadline.

Why this works

Random damage adds up to a spread of totals, not one total, so the moment of danger is a range. Following the whole spread turn by turn tells you how likely death is by each turn, and that is what an honest deadline has to rest on.

When not to use it

Skip it when the damage is fixed and known, where a plain countdown says everything, or when the player can heal freely at any time. Then the spread adds nothing, and a simple timer is clearer.
