Spielerando

Let wild plants ripen and rot on their own time without a timer on every plant

A world with thousands of berry bushes cannot afford to update each one every moment, and the player expects them to have grown while they were away. The state can be worked out when someone looks. But a change in growth speed in the middle needs care, or the plant jumps.

Why this works

Growth is a total of time spent under certain conditions, so it can be worked out when someone looks instead of tracked every moment. Settling the account before each change of conditions keeps the sum honest, and nothing needs watching while the player is away.

When not to use it

Skip it when plants must react at once to what the player does, such as growth during a fight or a magic spell, or when the world is tiny and a simple per-frame update is enough. Update those plants directly.
