Spielerando

Let word of the player's deeds reach distant towns only after days

If everyone in the world reacts to what the player did a minute ago, the world feels like one mind. If nobody ever hears, deeds have no weight. Here is how to work out on which day each town hears of a deed, using the real roads and a limit on how far news travels.

Why this works

News does not fly straight, it follows the roads, and a string of short hops can be quicker than one long way. So the day a town hears is the shortest travel time from where it happened, and far places never hear at all.

When not to use it

Skip it when the news is carried by something fast, such as a radio or a bird, where distance hardly matters. Or when the player should feel that everybody knows at once; then a simple flag for the whole world is clearer.
