Trigger a companion's story only after enough time spent together
A companion's heart-to-heart should come after the two have really travelled together, not after a number of days on which one of them was parked at camp. Here is how to add up only the hours both were present, and find the exact moment the story is due.
Why this works
A bond grows from time spent together, not from the calendar. Only the stretches where both were present and the player was out playing count, and merging overlapping records first keeps one hour from being counted twice.
When not to use it
Skip it when closeness should come from what happened, not how long, such as one act of courage that changes everything. Then give the bond a step at that moment. Time together alone would reward waiting rather than deeds.
