Find stretches of play where nothing story-related happens for too long
In an open world players can spend an hour gathering and building and forget there was a story at all. Here is how to read the moments of past story beats, list the dry stretches including the very start and end, and say where a gentle nudge could land.
Why this works
In an open world you cannot decide where the player will be, but you can measure how long they go without meeting the story. Looking at the gaps between beats, including the start and the end, shows where the plot has gone quiet.
When not to use it
Skip it when quiet is the pleasure, such as a game of building or gardening where the player sets the pace. Forced story there feels like an interruption; let the player ask for the story instead of pushing it on them.
