Is your villain hated, or does nobody care? Rating a character with a few testers

An average rating of three can mean "everybody shrugged" or "half adored and half detested", and those are opposite problems. This entry looks at how the ratings spread and names the type of character you have, so you fix the right thing.

Why this works

An average hides the difference between a character half the people love and half hate, and one nobody cares about. Both land in the middle. Looking at how the ratings spread shows which it is, and indifference is the real danger.

When not to use it

A rating of the person is the wrong tool for a villain you are meant to hate, and says little with few testers. Ask separately whether the character served the story. Use the spread only as a prompt for talking to testers.
