Carry your army from mission to mission without bringing back the dead

In a campaign of linked battles, the units a player keeps are part of the story. Here is how to hand the survivors to the next mission, heal them fairly, add reinforcements, and stop a fallen favourite from quietly walking back in through the recruitment screen.

Why this works

A death only means something if it stays. Writing down who has fallen before anything else is added means no later list, however it is built, can quietly bring someone back, and the player's losses keep their weight across missions.

When not to use it

Wrong for games where death is not final: a rogue-like with fresh squads, a story where healers revive the fallen, or a mode that forgives losses for younger players. There, let the dead return through a cost the player sees.
