The camera moves with every small step, and the view never feels calm

When the camera is glued to the player, tiny movements shift the whole world and tire the eyes. Letting the player move around in a small area before the camera reacts calms the picture. Here is how to move the camera by exactly the necessary amount and nothing more.

Why this works

The eye tires when the whole world moves for every small step. Letting the player roam in a small area, and moving the view only by the exact amount needed, keeps the background still while the character does the moving.

When not to use it

Wrong for fast games where the player must always sit in the middle to see danger from every side, and for tiny screens where the free area would fill the whole view. A tight, centred follow is better there, with only a little smoothing.
