Spielerando

When the treasury cannot pay the army, disband the weakest first and protect the heroes

Upkeep is paid every turn, and one day the money is not enough. A random unit leaving, or the treasury going below zero without end, both feel wrong. This entry shows a clear order of who goes first, how to stop as soon as the books balance, and what to tell the player about the ones who left.

Why this works

When money runs out, a clear order makes the loss a lesson instead of a lottery. Letting the least valuable go first, and the ones that cost most within a rank, ends the shortage with the fewest losses, and keeping the books at zero hides no debt.

When not to use it

Skip it when units are valued personally, as in a story with named characters, or when going into debt is part of the game. Then let the player choose who goes, or let debt build with real consequences.
