Start each boss phase once, even when one blow skips past two
A big creature that changes behaviour at set health marks is a classic of survival fights. The bugs are just as classic: a phase that fires again after healing, one that is skipped by a huge hit, or one that triggers on the killing blow. This entry covers all three.
Why this works
A phase change is an event in the fight, not a reading of the health bar. Remembering which ones already happened makes each fire exactly once, even when a heal, a huge blow or a killing hit would fool a simple before-and-after comparison.
When not to use it
Skip it for a boss that should behave the same all fight, or one whose phases should repeat, such as a cycle that restarts on healing. There, switch by timer or by a count of attacks, not by health.
