Keep a half-mined block's cracks for a moment when the player pauses, then let them heal
If every pause of the pickaxe wipes the cracks, mining a hard stone becomes a chore, and if cracks stay forever the world fills with half-broken blocks. Here is a rule that forgives a short pause, heals slowly after it, and tracks several blocks at once.
Why this works
Digging is a rhythm of strike, look, strike. Forgetting the progress the moment the aim slips punishes that rhythm, while keeping it forever leaves the world scarred. A short grace period and then a slow healing fits how people really work.
When not to use it
Don't use it when breaking a block should be a committed act that can be interrupted, such as a lock that resets if you lift the tool, or a puzzle that depends on a fresh start. There, reset the progress at once.
