Show the stamina wheel when it matters and fade it away after a calm moment
A stamina meter that is always on clutters the screen, and one that vanishes the instant it is full flickers when the player sprints in short bursts. Here is the rule for when it shows, how long it waits, and how quickly it fades in and out.
Why this works
Information that is always there becomes noise, and information that blinks in and out becomes a distraction. Showing it fast when it matters and leaving it slowly after a calm spell gives the eye time to read it, and short bursts of effort do not make it flicker.
When not to use it
Don't hide it in games where the meter is a main skill, such as a duel or a climbing game that is all about stamina, or for players who need steady cues. Keep it on screen all the time, or let the player choose.
