Spielerando

Testers see three versions of a scene: which order avoids favouring one?

Whatever version a tester sees last or first gets an unfair edge, through freshness or through novelty. This entry makes a schedule in which every version appears in every position equally often and follows every other equally often.

Why this works

Whatever a person sees first or last gets an unfair edge from novelty or freshness. You cannot remove the effect, but you can spread it evenly so that every version gets its share of good and bad positions and the effect cancels in the comparison.

When not to use it

Do not bother when each tester sees only one version, which is a cleaner test anyway, or when testers are so few that the schedule cannot be completed. Then simply show one version to each person and compare the groups.
