A shotgun blast that pushes you back, without turning into free flight
Recoil in the air is a great trick until a player stays aloft by firing again and again, or until the push slows someone who is already flying faster. Here is a push that works on the ground and in the air and still has a clear upper limit.
Why this works
Recoil is a push the player should feel, not an engine. Because the push adds up only to a ceiling, a few shots give a useful hop, while holding the trigger gets nowhere, and a character already moving faster is never slowed by the rule.
When not to use it
Wrong for a game where the weapon is a movement tool on purpose, like a rocket-jump arena; a low ceiling would feel like a bug there. It is also unnecessary for weapons so weak that no push is felt. Tune the strength per weapon instead.
