Steering in the air without gaining speed from nothing

Let players turn in mid-air and some will find that zigzagging makes them faster than running. Sometimes that is a joy, usually it breaks the level. Here is an air control that steers well, rewards a little skill and has a ceiling you chose.

Why this works

Steering in the air should bend the path, not add power. If pushing along your travel direction adds nothing and only sideways pushes add a little, the player feels in control but cannot cheat speed out of nothing by turning back and forth.

When not to use it

Wrong when speed-running tricks are the point, as in games built around bunny hopping and strafing. There, the cap removes the skill players came for. Choose it for games where jumps should feel committed and fair.
